Stump Grinding FAQs

You have questions and we have answers.

Check out some of the most common questions we get about stump grinding.

How much do you charge?

To give you an accurate price I need to see the stump and the environment around it. What I can tell you is that stumps between 13 and 33 inches run $33–$123. My grandfather charged a fair price and so do I. A minimum may apply to the visit.

Can I send you a picture?

No. And I mean that respectfully — a photo tells me almost nothing useful. The angle, the root spread, what's around it — none of that comes through in a picture. I need to see it in person.

Do you give free estimates?

Yes, but I come to work. I bring the machine to your location and give you a firm price on the spot. The best price you'll ever get from me is when I'm standing there with the equipment ready to go.

Can you give me an estimate before I cut the tree down?

No. I quote the job as it sits in front of me. Too many unknowns in a future job. Call me when the tree is down and out of the way and I'll give you a number on the spot.

I'm just looking for estimates right now.

I understand completely. If you're shopping around, I'd ask one favor — call me last. I'll be cheaper than whoever you called first, and I'll be standing there ready to grind the same visit. Also ask every company how deep they grind. You want at least six inches below grade so grass grows back clean and roots don't come up through your lawn and damage your mower blade.

Do you clean up the debris?

No. Keeping our prices where they are means I charge for the machine, not the cleanup. The sawdust piles up right next to the hole — about 90% of it lands right there — so it's easy for you to move or use as fill.

Would it just be cheaper to rent a stump grinding machine?

No — and this one is personal. My grandfather rented a machine once for a 20-inch stump and ground for two hours without finishing it. A family friend showed up with a commercial grinder and burned through it in minutes. That moment started this family business. The rental math never works out — add fuel, hauling, broken equipment, and a full day of hard labor and you've already spent more than we charge.

What time will you be here?

I genuinely don't know until I'm on my way. I build the route the night before based on all the stops for that day. The stump ahead of you could be 10 inches or 10 feet — I don't know how long it'll take until I'm looking at it.

How will I know when you'll be here?

I call your number when I finish the customer directly ahead of you and give you an exact arrival time. This process works with 99% of my customers and they're happy to work with me for the price.

It's 2PM, are you still coming today?

Yes. If you're on the schedule, I'll be there. My grandfather's word meant something and so does mine. Barring an equipment failure I will show up. If something major delays me I'll call you that day.

It's Raining, are you still coming today?

Yes. Same answer as above. Rain doesn't stop the grinder and it doesn't stop me.

Do you have any discount?

Yes. Military, first responders, and senior citizens always get 10% off. Multiple stumps on the same property can qualify for up to 20% off. Any single stump priced at $100 or more gets an additional 10% off that stump. Discounts are not stackable — the best one applies.

How quick can you get out to grind?

In most cases within a day or two, not including Sunday.

If a 16" stump is only $33, why is a 32" stump not just twice that?

Because a stump double the diameter isn't double the wood — it's nearly four times the area. That's geometry, not guesswork. More wood means more work means a higher price, but it's still fair.

How do you measure?

I measure from where the stump comes out of the ground on one side to where it goes back in on the other — average diameter. Straightforward.

The stump is a bit tall. Can you still do it?

Yes. I carry a chainsaw for exactly this reason. I can cut stumps or trees up to 12 feet before grinding.

Can you grind roots or palms?

Yes — most any organic biomass. Roots, palm stumps, palmettos, shrubbery. One tip: cut all the green off your palmettos and shrubbery before I arrive. Green leaves and vines don't grind — they wrap around the equipment and slow everything down.

Can you just grind the roots of a tree?

Yes, but I can't guarantee what happens to the tree that root is supporting. Grinding a major root can cause the tree to fall or die. That's your call to make — I just want you to know before we start.

Can you grind close to my home or fence?

Yes and no — I need to see the job first. What works in our favor is that my equipment is remote controlled. That gives me a level of precision and finesse that a standard walk-behind grinder can't match near structures.

I have a 36" gate. Can you get through?

Yes, but there's an additional $88 charge for the extra labor involved. A 57″ opening or wider avoids that charge entirely.

Why haven't you started yet?

Same reason Gramps always said — sign here first, and let me know if it's cash, check, or card.
